Choose the evening you want to host

A good dinner party menu leaves room for the people at the table. Start with the kind of evening you want: bowls of pasta passed around, a help-yourself taco table, or soup and bread on a cool night. Then choose food that works with your equipment and confidence.

These three menus each serve six. Each has one main cooking project, a simple side, and an easy finish. Ask guests about dietary needs before shopping, and review labels and recipe ingredients for the people attending. The quantities are planning amounts; adjust for appetite and any extra courses.

Menu one: a relaxed Italian-style supper

Serve tomato and white bean pasta, a lemon-dressed green salad, and pears with dark chocolate. The pasta carries the meal, the salad adds freshness, and dessert requires no oven.

Cook 525 g dry pasta according to its packet. In a large saucepan, warm three tablespoons olive oil and gently cook five minced garlic cloves for one minute. Add 1.2 kg canned chopped tomatoes, 720 g drained white beans, one and a half teaspoons dried oregano, and three-quarters teaspoon salt. Simmer for 12–15 minutes, then toss with the pasta, loosening with reserved cooking water as needed.

Dress 300 g mixed salad leaves with two tablespoons olive oil and one tablespoon lemon juice just before serving. Slice six pears at dessert time and serve with 90 g dark chocolate divided among the plates.

Menu two: a help-yourself taco-night table

Serve black bean and spinach quesadillas, lime slaw, salsa, and orange wedges. Keep the salsa and yogurt on the table so guests can choose their own additions.

Lightly mash 720 g drained black beans with one and a half teaspoons cumin. Chop 180 g spinach and grate 300 g cheddar. Divide the filling across six tortillas and cover with six more. Use about one and a half tablespoons oil to lightly brush the skillet over several batches. Cook the quesadillas over medium heat until both sides are browned, the filling is hot, and the cheese is melted. Cut into wedges.

Toss 300 g shredded cabbage with the juice of one lime and one tablespoon olive oil. Cut the second lime into wedges. Put 300 g salsa and 180 g plain yogurt in separate bowls, and finish the meal with six peeled oranges divided into segments.

Menu three: a cozy bistro supper

Serve red lentil, carrot, and tomato soup with toast, cucumber salad, and six portions of a purchased dessert. This menu puts most of the work in one pot.

Dice two small onions and 450 g carrots. Warm one and a half tablespoons olive oil in a large pot and soften the vegetables for about six minutes. Add one and a half teaspoons cumin, then 375 g rinsed red lentils, 600 g canned chopped tomatoes, and 1.5 litres vegetable stock. Simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring, until the lentils and carrots are soft. Add water if it becomes too thick. Taste before adding any extra salt because stocks vary.

Toast twelve slices of bread. Toss 300 g salad leaves and one sliced cucumber with two tablespoons olive oil and one tablespoon lemon juice just before serving. Choose a dessert with six portions and follow its storage instructions.

A prep timeline for each menu

Read the whole method before starting. Your pan capacity may require extra batches, particularly for quesadillas. Set out serving dishes and clear a space for finished food before guests arrive.

Put the whole evening on one menu

Create a menu for six in MenuDrop and add the main, side, and dessert separately. Attach your recipe where there is cooking to do and a product where you plan to buy something ready-made. Check the grocery list against all three courses so the lemon, bread, or dessert does not disappear from the plan.

Save the version that felt easy

After the evening, note whether you needed another skillet, extra bread, or fewer sides. Those details are the difference between a pretty menu and a dependable hosting plan. Keep the menu and refine it for the next gathering rather than starting from nothing each time.
